Dear 10X Business Builder,
We’re just a smidgen over a week into the New Year and I hope you’re still on fire and holding true to your New Year’s Resolution (if you made one).
I’m personally not a big fan of New Years resolutions because it has become customary, cliche and almost obligatory to not follow through with them.
What I prefer to do instead is to make a pact with myself. I know it’s basically the same thing, but for me, it’s more emotional and meaningful.
For example, this year I’m making a pact with myself that I will finish what I start. And I’m only going to ‘start’ projects that move me towards my vision.
By finish, I mean to completion or deletion. Not all projects are winners, but you’ll never know unless you complete them.
By keeping it simple like this, it will make it easy to decide which projects to work on (or not) and will help keep me from being pulled from what is important to me and Influenceology.
The reason following through with what you start is so important is because (unless you are doing things completely random), the reason you’re working on those tasks is for strategic reasons — to move you closer to a goal.
In our prospective worlds, there is never, ever a shortage of opportunity. And as you become more successful, the amount of opportunities just amplify.
What happens quite often is you have a vision, outcome, or a goal, and a game plan to accomplish them. You start to implement that game plan and then guess what?… Another opportunity, project, problem arises — and you’re off working on that — never to return to what you were doing before.
So if this describes you, and you’re at a lower level of success and you fight and claw to the next level, you’re only going to create more resistance to get to the next level because success creates more opportunities, that’s just the way it goes.
If you are constantly being pulled in different directions, you’re never making real progress towards your initiatives.
You’re like a beached fish, vigorously flip flopping, with no direction and no progress… and you’re going to be killed, gutted and eaten! Ok, I’m kidding — just joking, but you get the point.
Reflecting back on our year, (which was our best year yet…) I saw there were some really strategic projects that we (READ: I) started and never saw to success or failure.
Even though, it was a great year, I can’t help but ask myself, “what could it have been? How much closer could I have been to our vision?…”
It’s impossible to predict with high certainty if something is going to work, but you’ll never know unless you do it.
So this year decide where you want to go and with surgical precision decide where you want to go. Then, create a plan of action to get you there…
And then, do. Not. Deviate.
This year I am committed to hell or high water to finish what I start! (Like this article that I started two days ago!!!)
Here’s to a purposefully productive 2014!
