How to Make 2013 Your Best Year (Goal Setting)

How to Make 2013 Your Best Year (Goal Setting)

By Jeff Paro and Roberto Monaco

The first step to making this your biggest year ever, is to get clear on exactly what you want.

“Clarity is power!”… I can still hear Tony Robbin’s voice in my head. If you don’t know where you want to go, how will you know if you are there?

Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve will allow you to break down your vision into more definable and manageable goals.

Just like there are many ways to get to where you want to go, there are many different ways to set goals. The best goal setting system is the one that you use and achieve the result you are after.

Obviously since Roberto and I spent so much time in the Anthony Robbins organization, we have been heavily influenced by Tony’s way of goal setting. Over time we have incorporated other variations and components and we want to share this with you today.

Back in 2009 before we launched InfluenceOlogy, one of Roberto’s first goals was to create a seminar event called “Influencing from the Front” and he used this technology to make it happen.

Before, I show you an example of how it works, let’s look at the elements of the system.

Ultimate Vision

The long term vision for a specific area of your life. The result you want to be experiencing and living in the future. It can be a 5, 15, or 20-year vision. The biggest and the most challenge your vision is, the more emotional drive you will have to follow through.

Life Commitment

These are your standards that you will live by every single day. Who you are committed to be and what you are committed to do in that particular area of your life

3-month short term goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time)

These are the short-term results you are committed to achieve that will get you closer to that vision. The result must be specific (lose 10 pounds), measurable (you can measure your progress), achievable (does not depend on other people to do it), realistic (you are loosing 10 pounds not 500 pounds) and has a time orientation (you want to lose the 10 pounds by an specific date)

Purpose: Why do I want to achieve this goal?

The more associated you are with “why” you want to achieve your goals, the more drive you will have. The why is bigger than the how

Roles: Who will you be as this person?

Your role is the person you would have to play in order to achieve these goals. Sometimes we need to give ourselves a new identity to get what we want. Use words that emotionally move you.

3 to Thrive:

3 areas within this category that you probably need to focus on most often

Possible Obstacles

Listing out possible obstacles that may prevent you from achieving your results.

Possible Solutions

Planning ahead the solutions for the potential obstacles.

Skills needed to reach this goal

Resources: People, group and or organizations to work with to reach this goal

Rome wasn’t built over night and it wasn’t built by one person. In order to achieve your goals you will more than likely need the help of others. By identifying them, your awareness will be heightened to notice when they appear.

MAP (Massive Action Plan): Write the action and the target date for that action:

Having action items and due dates builds in commitment and urgency. In addition, you won’t be so overwhelmed or lost wondering what you should be working on next.

In your 3 to thrive section of the article you mention the need to look for possible obstacles. I don’t know how many times I’ve set a goal without realizing what will be in the way. It’s helpful in analyzing your ability to accomplish the goal by looking for all of the possible obstacles that will be in your path. The key is to not let them keep you from moving toward the goal.
